Every hobby has a history and electric remote control car enthusiasts date back to just after the Second World War. Interest was minimal until about the 1960′s when momentum in the industry grew due to consumer demand.
Since those early days the variety of models has expanded along with the preferences of the consumer. Scaled models mimic their full size counterparts with attention paid to all the working parts so that performance on the model just like the full size big brother will depend very much on the quality of the individual parts. The enthusiast looking for a good experience with this hobby will be motivated by the performance of the vehicle. This will be determined by the design and the quality of the parts so a big part of the experience for the enthusiast is to source good quality parts and build the model from scratch.
Over the years models have improved in design, quality and performance just like the road and race cars they are models of. Manufacturers raising the standards are motivated by a market where families, parents and children will get involved as well as adults who take the hobby very seriously to the point that competitions are organized around the world.
As with all hobbies there is a cost and in line with just about most things the enthusiast will get what he or she pays for. Having said this it is also true to say that the real cost of this hobby has reduced over the years. Perhaps another way to view it is that nowadays the enthusiast will get a higher return in terms of a quality experience and performance of the model for the money spent.
The manufacturers cater to an ever widening market and the result is an increasing variety of models to choose from. There are models designed with children in mind. Taking this a stage further there are cars designed with boys in mind and others designed with girls in mind. This then is a hobby that can have a family factor as a level of supervision is might be helpful and over the years families have benefited from their involvement with electric remote control cars.
On the other hand there are models that are intended for adult use and this because of the skills required to build and to operate these machines.
Interest in this hobby has probably plateaued and maybe even subsided a little however the future for those who enjoy working with model cars is exciting as technology continues to improve and bring changes we can only for now imagine
